CSU GPA Calculator — California State University GPA Rules

Cal State uses the same a-g course list as UC, with its own eligibility index and campus by campus standards.

The California State University system builds an admission GPA from the a-g college prep course list, the same list the UC system uses. Courses outside that list do not count.

Cal State combines that GPA with other factors into an eligibility index. Campuses and majors that receive far more applications than they have seats are called impacted, and those programs set higher standards than the system minimum.

Because standards vary by campus and by major, two students with the same GPA can get very different results. Applying to a less impacted campus or a less impacted major within the same campus often changes the outcome.

How to Calculate It

1Pull your a-g courses off your transcript and list each semester grade separately.
2Convert each grade to points on the 4.0 scale, then add the approved honors bonus where it applies.
3Average the points to get your admission GPA.
4Compare that number against the published range for the specific campus and major you want, not the system wide minimum.

The system publishes a minimum GPA for eligibility, and it is higher for nonresidents. That minimum only gets your application considered. Impacted campuses such as the largest urban ones routinely admit students well above it, so the realistic target is the published range for your specific campus and major.

Impacted means the program gets more qualified applicants than it has seats. When that happens the campus raises its own standards, which usually means a higher GPA, additional required coursework, or a supplemental review. The same major can be impacted at one campus and wide open at another.

Often not. Your school GPA includes every course you took. The CSU admission GPA counts only approved a-g college prep courses and applies its own honors weighting rules. Students with a lot of electives usually see the two numbers drift apart.
