Florida recalculates a weighted GPA from required core courses and sets different bars for each award level.

Florida Bright Futures has multiple award levels, and each level sets its own GPA requirement along with test score and service hour requirements.

The GPA is recalculated by the state from a required set of core courses in English, math, science, social studies, and world language. Your high school's printed GPA is not the number used.

The state does apply weighting for approved advanced courses, so AP, IB, AICE, and dual enrollment work can lift the recalculated number above a straight unweighted average.

How to Calculate It

1Identify the required core courses on your transcript for each of the five subject areas.
2Convert those grades to 4.0 scale points.

4Average the weighted points and compare the result to the current requirement for the award level you are targeting.

Aim for the highest tier you can realistically reach, since it covers more of your tuition. The tiers differ in required GPA, test scores, and volunteer or work hours. Students who miss the top tier by a small margin usually still qualify for the next level down, so it is worth checking every requirement rather than assuming you missed out.

Approved dual enrollment courses generally receive the same bonus weight as AP and IB courses in the recalculated GPA. They can also satisfy core course requirements at the same time. Confirm that the specific course appears on the state approved list before you count on it.

Yes. Bright Futures is renewed each year and requires a minimum college GPA plus a minimum number of credit hours earned. Falling below either can suspend the award. Some students are able to restore it after a review, but the rules are strict, so it is safest to stay above the line.
